The Governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. This series consists of the administrative files of Governor Jelks. It contains reports, correspondence, clippings, leaflets, lists, pamphlets, and telegrams. The records consists of correspondence and other materials regarding numerous state departments and agencies. In particular the Dept. of Agriculture and Industries, Convict Dept., the Insane Hospitals, and the State Dept. of Education are well represented. Major subjects of discussion include: the Consitutional convention of 1901 and the new constitution of the state, appointments to various offices, the attempt to reform convict leasing in Alabama, reform of the child labor laws, reform of the State Railroad Commission, cotton and cotton manufacturing, education, and the creation of Houston County.
